The Mediterranean Seafood Calendar: What Fish to Eat and When?

When staying on the breathtaking turquoise coasts of Fethiye, experiencing the local culinary heritage is a journey of its own. However, to truly enjoy the riches of the Mediterranean, there is one golden rule followed by gourmands worldwide: consuming seafood exactly in its right season, when the fish are at their most flavorful and nutrient-rich.

Here is our curated seasonal guide to navigating the seafood scene in the Aegean and Mediterranean seas like a true local expert.

1. Autumn (September - October - November)

The Awakening of the Seas. As the commercial fishing bans lift in September, the fish markets come alive with species migrating from the colder northern seas down to the warmer Mediterranean waters.

2. Winter (December - January - February)

The Peak of Rich Flavors. The cold winter waters force the fish to develop a natural layer of healthy fats. This is the time for rich, comforting, and intensely flavorful seafood dishes.

3. Spring (March - April - May)

The Transition to Light and Fresh Tastes. As the weather warms up, breeding and migration seasons alter the sea's dynamics. The focus shifts toward lighter, delicate, white-meat fish.

4. Summer (June - July - August)

The Stage of the Mediterranean Natives. While the massive migratory schools retreat, the native, deep-water Mediterranean species and exquisite shellfishes dominate the elegant summer evenings.

The "Loft Gastronomy" Note for Our Guests:

During your stay at Ölüdeniz Loft, we highly recommend exploring local boutique restaurants for a fresh, salt-baked Lagos (White Grouper) or locally sourced Mercan during the summer months. Paired with Aegean olive oil and fresh herbs, it represents the authentic taste of Fethiye.
